Search Engine Optimization or SEO - The Critical Components to Great Search Engine Rankings

SEO Articles : Search Engine Optimization or SEO - The Critical Components to Great Search Engine Rankings by Keith Raymond

When people with websites find out I'm an Internet Marketing Consultant, the first question I'm often asked is: "why isn't my website ranking in the search engines?" There seems to be this assumption that "if you build it, they will come". Many website owners are often disappointed once their site is up that the site is ranking poorly or not at all. They question me why it isn't and what they can do about improving the site rankings.

If you want to improve your or your clients' website rankings in search engine results of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, you must learn what makes a site rank well. Not knowing what makes a page rank well is why your competitor's website is at the top of search engine results and yours is not. Search engine optimization or SEO strategies are the critical components that help your site rank well. If you want your site to rank well in search engine results, your page must have these 4 essential factors of search engine optimization if you want to improve website search engine rankings:

1. The first element to search engine optimization is the web page copy and content. Search engines look for good quality, relevant pages with the keywords your audience uses when they search online. Each of your website pages should have the keywords and phrases your clients are searching for on each particular page. If your site is about "Internet Marketing Strategies" then you should have those keywords in the web copy of that page. The more relevant your copy is to targeted keywords your audience uses, the better the relevancy of the site in the rankings for the search terms.

2. The second critical factor to help your search engine optimization tactics are meta tags. Meta tags, often overlooked and misunderstood, are elements of HTML coding on a website. Search engines use these meta tags to help them determine what the site is about and assist with indexing a website. Most meta tags are included within the 'header' code of a website. The most important tags are the title tag, description tag and the keywords tag. Different search engines have different rules about how these tags are used and how many characters they should contain. Of importance to the process is if you know how the big three - Google, Yahoo and MSN - review the tags, then you'll be targeting 90% of potential web surfers.

3. The next on site search engine optimization strategy is your internal linking. By optimizing your linking structure, you'll be creating a rich web of interlinking within your site. Whenever possible include links to related products, articles, and information. The navigation menu plays a key role in passing deep link gain into your site. This will help pass on your page ranking. To help out your internal page ranking, creating a site map can help search engine crawlers find all the rich content and related pages on your site. You should also use anchor text when internally linking within your site. Instead of "click here" you should use the keywords or phrases like "Search Engine Optimization" as a text link.

4. The fourth factor to good search engine ranking is off page tactics. The most common tactic is obtaining quality back links or inbound links to your site from relevant websites. Initiating and maintaining linking strategies is a core factor to getting your site in Google search results. Google expresses the quality and quantity of these back links as PageRank or PR. PageRank is a function of the quantity and strength of inbound links. PageRank estimates the likelihood that a given page will be reached by a web user who randomly surfs the web, and follows links from one page to another. In effect, this means that some links are stronger than others, as a higher PageRank page is more likely to be reached by the random surfer.

Some great ways to get quality inbound links includes: Links from your industry peers, business partners and associations. There are also Industry directories, such as web designer directories and more general SEO directories where you can submit a link to the appropriate category. You may want to consider writing and submit topic relevant articles to article directories like ezinearticles.com. With every article submission, you are allowed to include your resource box. Your resource box can contain a link to your website. Press releases are perhaps the most underrated tools to acquire one way links. All you have to do is to write an objective, newsworthy press release announcing your website, and thereafter, submit the same to press release wires throughout the internet, such as www.prweb.com. Press releases are also excellent ways to gain direct visitors.

With these 4 essential tactics, you'll be accelerating your search engine optimization strategies and on the path to higher search engine ranking. SEO is not about tricking search engines, but making it easier for them to spider your site or client sites to determine the relevancy of the site. With just a few SEO adjustments to your website and content, in no time you could soon find your site at the top of search engine results for your targeted keyword.

Search Engine Optimization. A True Test In Patience

SEO Articles : Search Engine Optimization. A True Test In Patience by Carrie Haggerty

Search engine optimization is not an exact science. Anyone who is in the industry or has successfully executed a SEO campaign knows that it can take a number of months before you can truly reap the benefits. With that being said, search engine optimization starts from the birth of a website. If you own a website or are thinking of starting one, arming yourself with some useful information during the beginning stages will make your campaign run a lot smoother.

Stage 1. Designing your site. This is the most critical of all stages, if your site is not search engine friendly you have already began the costly road to re-design. Talk to your web designer and make sure he doesn't talk you into a flash website or a website that uses frames. Although frames have been almost put to rest, I will on a occasion run into a site or two and find myself shaking my head and well flash sites are very attractive to the visitor, all your vital content is put into a file that search engines can't crack. IF you really do love a flash site, there are ways to get around this. Simply ask your designer to create you a html version of your site so you can offer one for visitors and one for search engines. As for e-commerce sites do your research carefully, there are many free shopping carts and database driven sites that will talk big and look good but do not have certain features that can be a crucial part of search engine optimization. Look for seo friendly URL's, editable title tags for each individual page, ability to change content when new and updated information comes available.

Stage 2. Site completion. When your site is ready to go and fully designed start the initial steps to linking. Search engines like Google and Yahoo! can not find you unless you let them know you are there. Look at the biggest directories and start submitting. FYI, the sooner you get yourself submitted to DMOZ the better. If you want to talk true test in patience try to get listed in that monstrosity in a timely manner, but I digress. Now there are many SEO's will dazzle you with the idea that you will need to re-submit to these search engines and directories but trust me with saying that once is enough, and often times there may be a penalty issued if you submit your site too many times. Let your friends know you have a website, add it to your myspace, facebook & linkedin or any social bookmarking site that you use. If your friends have a website , go ahead buy them lunch and ask them to add your link. The more time you spend linking before hiring an SEO firm, the less time you spend waiting for results.

Stage 3. Keyword Analysis. Find out your best choice of keywords. What are people searching for, sometimes you think you know the right keyphrase but you can be completely wrong. Talk to your colleagues, clients and friends. Ask what they would type when searching for your product or service. In most cases it can be fairly easy. You own a bed & breakfast in anytown, your obvious choice would be "anytown bed and breakfast". With some simple research you can find your best keywords.

The next phase is to decide weather you want to start this campaign yourself or hire a SEO firm. In either case you can be waiting to see top page results for up to 6 months, with an established site with a starting page rank. If you are a brand new site, this process can take up to a year. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day, and SEO is an investment you can not afford to pass by. Marketing in any size will take time, but if you are patient and let the ball roll as it should you will see how your investment pays you back tenfold.

Google Best Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Practices - Part 1

SEO Articles : Google Best Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Practices - Part 1 by sas_loredana

This article will guide you through the important steps on how to create and maintain sites in Google. If you have an existing site, use this as a reference to ensure that you are doing everything right. I am going to review 5 areas at a time.

First things first... the domain name dilemma. Your domain name should be brandable. Keyword rich with hyphens type of domains are not longer relevant. Focus on a .com since it is the one searchers will enter when not sure about extensions, and is the easiest to brand. As far as registering it, do it for more than one year since this helps with the "trustbox" in Google. If you have many related domain names for the same content it is always good to only take one as the main domain and to redirect (301) any others to it. This way, you can make sure not to have duplicate content issues.

Less is more, when it comes to web design. Your text content should outweigh your html code. Make sure your code is "search engine friendly". That is a big different with being W3C compliant. The W3C is too limited, and a lot of code warnings will appear with perfectly acceptable code. Their validation system is simply outdated. You want to be search engine compliant, not W3C compliant. Keep this in mind.

Javascript and CSS, in code or out? Good question. JavaScript and CSS should be in external files. They will increase page size otherwise. Specially when having the same code for menus or styles on multiple pages, when this can be easily fixed by doing it externally.

Demystifying the page size limit. There is NOT page size limitation here. There you have it. The 101kb limit thing is absolutely incorrect. But do not take this the wrong way. You need to make sure the size of your page is about 40K on average. Up to 50K is OK. Consider loading time as a factor, and the text/graphics ratio is very important.

Web hosting solutions and their impact. Use your own dedicated server whenever possible. Make sure you have a static IP address assigned to either individual domains or groups of domains, and make sure that it is clean, by not being in any blacklist.

How to Design a Search Engine to Actually Search

How to Design a Search Engine to Actually Search

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

There are several simple techniques to develop a search-engine
that actually finds information, rather than just millions of matching pages. Searches should default to looking within paragraphs/sections, not across entire pages. Today's popular search-engines are mostly primitive word-scanners, not usually searching for sections of information, nor hunting the exact names being requested, such as with dashes & slashes in ID names.

Steps

  1. PARADIGM SHIFT: Searching for actual information requires: a new way of thinking about searching text; and new ways to group text within a page: it is too primitive to attempt hunting information by looking at all text on a page; advanced techniques are needed to split a page into related sections. Just as grouping letters into words is a major step above searching for strings of characters/letters, grouping words into sections or paragraphs is the next major break-through in search-engine technology (as trivial as it might seem). This is part of the paradigm shift: instead of looking at a page as a stream of characters/letters, it is viewed as words; then, instead of looking at a page as a stream of words, it should be searched as sections/paragraphs of words.
  2. FORGET SEARCH-ENGINES TODAY: Forget the way popular search-engines work today (2006): they are primitive compared to techniques developed 25 years ago at NASA: almost no search-engines today can pinpoint information the easy way, but rather obsess on matching millions of related pages: it appears to be "search-engine envy": with "my results are bigger than yours." Judging search-performance should not be based on "how many millions of pages were matched" but rather: Was the information pinpointed? How quickly were the questions answered? In any technological age, the current techniques can be viewed as "primitive" compared to better ideas in the future; however, to consider today's search-engines as "stone-age dinosaurs" is the beginning of wisdom. Many search-engines display ads on every page: it is in the interest of those ads to extend & prolong a search to display many pages of ads, rather than to pinpoint information.
  3. SEARCH WITHIN SECTIONS/PARAGRAPHS: Plan the search-engine to look within paragraphs or sections of text, rather than searching entire pages for matching words. Often related words, that pinpoint a topic, usually occur within one sentence of each other. If paragraphs are too difficult to determine, allow a search-bracket of n-words (such as 30 words) to confine the search to logically related text. In practice, searching across entire pages to find so-called "related" words is one of the most ignorant techniques ever thought of on a whim: it might be trivial to search entire pages; however, more advanced techniques are needed beyond today's primitive, low-tech search-engines with the mindless search-all mentality. (The problem is rampant: even some book-searches hunt words across entire pages & cannot find words within just a paragraph/phrase.) Being trivial is no excuse for continuing to use ignorant search-techniques. The advanced techniques are not that much more difficult to implement.
  4. SEARCH LITERAL WORDS: When information amasses, it is critical to differentiate between "a/an/the" to pinpoint information. Assuming to ignore some words just empowers a bias that insults the intelligence of potential users: perhaps have a rare option to ignore a list of words that includes "a/an/the/of/in" but, by default, search for every word specified. Let users learn to omit restrictive words; implicit omission of some words is as limiting as implicit declaration of misspelled variable-names in computer software: don't do it. (If someone misspells "off" as "of" then what happens? See? Understand the danger of implicitly ignoring words.)
  5. SEARCH LITERAL CHARACTERS: If able technically, expect to search for literal strings such as "Project XRAY-10/NOVA" where the dash ('-') and slash ('/') are critical to the search: in practice, the searched text can have those characters converted to spaces when they are not in the search-phrase requested by a user; however, if pre-storing the searched words, then both forms can be indexed/stored (both "XRAY 10 NOVA" and literal name "XRAY-10/NOVA" can be indexed).
  6. EXPECT INTELLIGENCE: Don't be cruel or critical of today's primitive search-engines & book-search programs; many people are intelligent enough to progress beyond the low-tech search-ideas of today, both as developers & users of the new-wave of advanced search-techniques. Computer technology, as a vast array of ideas, is complicated enough so that almost anyone can overlook obvious advances & get stuck in yester-year's technology, even thousands of computer professionals. The field is a mix of smart + dense: pages can be stored in complex, sophisticated databases but cannot be searched by paragraph, only by low-tech page-wide scans.
  7. SIMPLE PROTOTYPE: To test the above new ideas, a simple prototype search-program could be developed to search for phrases by converting a line of text into words separated by spaces, with an added trailing-space after the last word on the line; then, each word in the search-phrase is padded with a trailing-space to scan against the blank-terminated words in the text string. Each text-string in the file or web page would be searched in similar fashion. Keep a counter until all search-words are counted as matching.
  8. PIGGYBACK SEARCH: Since many of today's search-engines match too many pages, software could be written to scan those matched pages to pinpoint information. A program could retrieve each matched page, and searching within paragraphs while checking for dashes/slashes, that program could pinpoint the information within hundreds of web pages matching the low-tech search. Such a program could also hunt for a/an/the within each matching web page, and pinpoint the results without the user wading through many pages of ads.
  9. PROVEN TECHNIQUES: Don't say, "That's too advanced; they'll never understand searching by paragraphs & literal names." People have an amazing capacity to move beyond limiting ideas of old search-techniques. Many of the above techniques were proven, in actual end-user applications, 25 years ago at NASA. That was an entire generation ago. It's just another case of "back to the future" in technology. The Renaissance overcame the Dark Ages, so better search-technology can, in fact, be achieved again.

Tips

  • KEYWORD "NEAR": Some search-engines can already limit searches to partial paragraphs/sections by using the keyword "NEAR" in the search phrase. Experiments using the NEAR keyword can help demonstrate the advantages of limiting searches to paragraphs or sections, rather than searching across entire pages.

Warnings

  • SPAM KILLING SEARCH-ENGINES: The foolish, low-tech approach of matching words across the entire page, rather than matching within paragraphs/sections has helped promote spam-pages that include 10,000 unrelated words, hoping to spam-match into the search-results. So, today's search-engines are becoming flooded with spam-pages and could become practically useless unless they deter further spam-pages. When writing a program to scan within a particular search-engine's results, be prepared to change to yet another search-engine that isn't being killed by spam as fast.

How to Tailor Content for Search Engine Optimazation

How to Tailor Content for Search Engine Optimazation (SEO)

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Content still reigns as the king in the world of Search Engine Optimization. Some websites get on top of SERPs because of high-powered link building campaigns, but when you talk about visitor loyalty and traffic retention (and yes, public consumption), it will always require that good ol’ optimized content

Steps

  1. Readers first, then keywords. In the previous years, SEOs follow this trend: “keywords first, then content”. Now that Google has become more sophisticated, and integrated more complex numerical linguistic methods into its algorithm, webmasters found out that it ain’t just the keywords that matter, but the related terms that revolve around your content. That means you can’t just repeat the word, “cheap cars for sale” twenty times in your paragraphs. It needs more substance (and related words) than that. It’s almost like writing for your readers alone, and not the search engines. But of course, it’ll be Google and the others who will determine your rankings.
  2. Diversify Anchor Text Links As Aaron Wall pointed out, there has to be some variations in the text when one creates those blue-highlighted anchor text links. The links on a page are what the search engine spiders follow in determining your website structure. Most likely, the text used in the links are being considered in figuring out what a page is all about. You may also set some keyphrases in bold letters. That tells the spiders which terms you’re trying to emphasize, just don’t overdo it.
  3. Take note of word count Although it’s been a classic rule that “readers online do not read”, it simply doesn’t mean that one has to deprive the online users of good, meaty content. Stick to at least 250 words a page. SEOs know that writing down for an appropriate length of text means being more able to include more related terms for the target keywords.
  4. Social Bookmarking If the content is real good (i.e. controversial, substantial, significant to a great part of the crowd), then it’s best to digg it, make people reddit, and tag people at delicious. News items are great at Netscape.com. How to’s and tips are perfect in [Wikihow].
  5. Social Networking Share your blog announcements, latest promos, or any significant tidbit of a fact at your bulletin and Group posts at MySpace, and any other social networks you find helpful in bringing traffic to your site. Just a tip: Make it short and sweet in your bulletin posts since a bulletin is supposed to be quick.
  6. Content Submissions Good quality traffic from reputable websites like ezinearticles, goarticles, and isnare will help out in traffic and visibility. It might hurt your rankings though, because these sites are deemed “authorities” or of great value by Google.
  7. Blogging does a good job at sharing and syndicating content. If you have a website, and a separate blog (checkout: Link Building with your Blog), it’ll ease out the load in gaining visitors.

Tips

  • A SEO-friendly content is no longer the restrictive, robotical-sounding content it used to be. Search engines, in their aim to continuously refine search are catering more to the online readers, the social aspect of the World Wide Web. Content comes out to be more human-centered, and ready for consumption.

Search Engine Optimization Revealed

SEO Articles : Search Engine Optimization Revealed by Tod A Dale

Increasing your page rank through search engine optimization, (SEO), includes many different strategies and techniques. Before we discuss exactly what search engine optimization is, let's talk a little bit about how search engines work.

Search engines provide specific data that match the search terms of users by sifting information and providing only the most relevant results based on keywords or targeted words and phrases.

Search engine results would be of no good to users if the information they pulled up was either not relevant or particularly outdated. People expect only the most recent and targeted information in the search engine results.

If you update your web site each day and add relevant information to it, the search engines will be more likely to pick your web site up and rank it higher.

Boost your traffic and sales by optimizing your website and keeping the content fresh an updated. This is absolutely imperative if you want to have success as an online entrepreneur.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, means that a business owner uses strategic copy to make sure that the search engines pick up their website. It's a specific way for one competitor to succeed over another, since competition for page ranking has in itself created a huge market of its own.

The most effective way to increase your page rank is to simply supply high-quality content consistently in your web pages. This seems simple, but in fact, many online businesses think that they can provide shoddy but "keyword optimized" copy and still get the same results. This is not true.

Your content must be well written, interesting, and regularly updated so that visitors will keep coming back. It will also help to increase word-of-mouth so that you can draw more prospective customers to your web site.

While you want to make your web site fresh and interesting, if you try to "sell" people or otherwise be flashy and it isn't you, people will know this and simply go away. In other words, for best search engine optimization, be real.

Next, you need to include what are called "high converting" keywords and phrases in your content. This means that you place keywords in your content so that search engines will pick up your pages and place them high in search engine rankings.

You used to be able to "stuff" your content with keywords every other line and get great page ranking. Now, you must strategically use keywords, because if you have too many, the search engines will actually lower your page rank or even drop you.

Ideally, you want to place keywords in the first and last paragraph of your content and shoot for about 3% keyword content in the overall copy itself.

Implementing a linking strategy as part of your SEO plan will give you free advertising for your site. As more and more people link to your site, you will receive increased exposure and gain "expert" status as well. For every link that you have pointing to your site, this is another chance for your customer to find you. The more inbound links you have, the higher your rank will be in search engines.

Formulate a strategy for your content because most people who go online are looking for information, period. The more helpful the information, the more likely they will become eventual customers.

One of the best ways to do this is to write articles and post them on your site and to other Web e-zines and directories. Adding more pages allows the search engines another opportunity to find you and results in higher page ranking. This, in turn, will draw even more visitors.

Make your site easy to navigate and the articles easy to find. You can develop a menu that will clearly describe the articles you write and arrange them by subject. This will bring you more traffic as you add pages to your site.

Search engine optimization is vital to acquiring top page rankings. Done correctly, this one technique can increase your site's exposure and popularity, and in turn will drive traffic to your site that will help your business succeed beyond your wildest dreams.

Benefits Of Using Search Engine Optimization

SEO Articles : Benefits Of Using Search Engine Optimization by Derek Rogers

Without customers any business will fail. For websites, this translates to interested visitors who will browse the site's offerings and possibly buy now or at a later date. The main way websites are able to attract targeted visitors is through search engine optimization (SEO).

SEO refers to strategies you implement to optimize your website pages so that they are search engine friendly. This will allow you to maximize your position on the search pages for certain search terms. This is known as your search engine page rank. The higher your page rank, the more likely it is that searchers will click on your link and visit your website.

The reason why everyone with a website should use search engine optimization on their website pages is to generate free search engine traffic to their site. Pay per click advertising can be expensive and is not as effective as the free variety although it can get traffic to your site quickly. A better, longer term strategy is to optimize your site to maximize free traffic that has already shown an interest by searching for related terms.

Unfortunately, Google's original formula for calculating page rank was able to be understood and abused by internet marketers who used 'keyword stuffing' to gain a high page rank. This means they overused keywords to fool search engines into giving them a high page rank. A lot of unintelligible content was created on the web at this time and even where the content had some value, it was often written badly to accommodate keywords. It didn't take very long for Google to realise this was going to become a huge problem. If its search engine was to be valued, it had to give users valuable results and filter out the garbage. So it changed its calculations and now a relatively low keyword density is valued and a high keyword density is penalized.

Furthermore, Google included the concept of Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) in its search engine rule so that synonyms and related expressions on a web page were given value. What this means is that if you want a high page rank, you should write naturally using a range of common descriptions and expressions to explain your information as well as your keywords (kept to a minimum).

If you use your keyword (it can be a phrase) in the title, in the first paragraph and the last paragraph as well as in the body of the text so that the total keyword density is no more than one to two percent, you will give yourself an advantage with the search engines. Furthermore, you will not risk a penalty for using your keyword too many times.

More than anything, write for your readers. Give them good value and aim to please. As your website becomes more popular, it will grow naturally. You will find other sites gradually linking to you, which will increase your link popularity (another factor in page rank calculations). If you combine common sense SEO practices with valuable, informative content you will improve your page rank gradually and increase the number of interested visitors to your site. More visitors equals more customers. More customers equals more money. That's why search engine optimization is important.

Search Engine Optimization-SEO-Website Cornerstone Development

SEO Articles : Search Engine Optimization-SEO-Website Cornerstone Development by Zach Hoffman

SEO, also known as Search Engine Optimization, is the process of placing a website as a relevant source for a topic of information at the top of the major Search Engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN. There are many ways to perform SEO. The following are a few of the many techniques we use to create an SEO campaign.

The first step is choosing the keywords you want to target. These should include words that you feel your target audience would type in to the search engines to find your website. If you are looking to target a city tied to your keywords please consider selecting the top 3 cities you would like to target to tie in with your target keywords.

The second step is to choose a domain name relevant to the topic of your website. Using keywords in your domain name relevant to the keywords you are looking to target will help you communicate your relevance to the associated keywords you are looking to target with the major search engines.

The third step is to map out your website. This information should have been provided to you from your website designer. The site map is the layout of your website as a hierarchical structure working from the primary pages of your website, to the secondary pages of your website, and onto the tertiary pages of your website. There may be additional pages under this hierarchy and you should categorize them as such.

The fourth step is to begin writing the meta-tags for each web page you would like to be optimized. You should start with your primary pages and work your focus down. The meta-tags should be written with three distinct areas: title creation, keyword targeting, and description. The title is what will appear in the upper left hand corner of the web browser describing what the specific page is about. The keyword targeting will be the keywords you are instructing the search engine to mark your page as relevant for when it comes to the particular page. Description is the summary of the webpage you would like to display as the description of the website to the major search engines. Creating proper meta-tags is the cornerstone to creating a Search Engine Optimized-SEO website. The meta-tags should also all have a tightly weaved theme relevant to each other.

The fifth step is to categorize your site properly for directory submission. This means knowing how to classify your website based on the industry you know your site is relevant for. The directory will also ask which geographic area you are most relevant for and ask you to most likely categorize your website on a country level. The search engine will then most likely pull your city specific information from your meta-tags and your contact us page.

The process to SEO your website described above is a great starting point for a solid SEO campaign. SEO is a continuous process because the search engines continue to tweak their search engine algorithms (functions) to allow the most relevant websites to reign supreme. When performing SEO always remember relevancy is king.

SEO Search Engine Optimisation

SEO Search Engine Optimisation Author: Paul Rice

Are you wondering why your website is not attracting the abundance of new customers you expect? Looking at your current positioning in Search Engine results and your current SEO, Search Engine Optimisation may provide you with the answer. Most people searching on the internet will use one of the major Search Engines with most not looking past the first couple of pages for information on a product or service they are looking for. So ensuring your website has a good search engine listing will increase the amount of traffic to your site increasing your customer base.

Having a beautifully designed website is not enough in today’s highly competitive market of Website Marketing and SEO, Search Engine Optimisation is crucial for ensuring that your website is highly ranked in relevant search results. Optimising your site around relevant key phrases will help your site’s organic Search Engine listings.

They are two ways in which you can increase your search engine listings the most familiar of the two is pay per click these are the sponsored links that appear at the top and to the right of the Search Engine results. Pay per click advertising is set up with the Search Engine providers where you only pay when a user clicks on your sponsored link to visit your site. As an advertiser you bid on the key phrase you have decided to market, the amount you bid can vary considerable depending on the popularity of the key phrase costing as much as £25 per click, so managing these campaigns needs careful planning. Then when a user types in a matched phrase your ad will be displayed in the position depending on the relevance of your ad and the amount you have bid.

The second option is to improve your organic listing through SEO, Search Engine Optimisation and there are now companies that specialise in this service. These companies have the relevant background and knowledge to optimise your site to enable the search engine spiders to read and index your site more effectively. An experience company implementing SEO will first research your market area and current marketing strategy to decide in the best key phrases to use and will then apply changes to your website content that will increase your search engine positioning. Other more advanced online and off line techniques can be applied and your SEO provider should be able to recommend these to you if they are necessary.

There are no guarantees that any of the techniques used will get you a page 1 positioning as the search engines can change their algorithms and the more competitive the arena is for the phrase being marketed the harder it is to get a high ranking. Beware of companies that offer this to you as they are either making false promises or implementing black hat techniques.

With most people now using the internet when purchasing goods or services having good SEO, Search Engine Optimisation implemented on your site can be one of your most cost effective valuable marketing tools. Careful consideration should be taken when choosing an SEO company that can implement good onsite changes supported with relevant off site work. This will remove from your from the bottom of the marketing pile to the top were targeted customers can view your products and services, increasing your sales potential.

DIY SEO Tip 3 - Use Keywords in Your File Names

DIY SEO Tip 3 - Use Keywords in Your File Names From Randy Duermyer

How You Name Your Website Files Matters for SEO

Use keywords in file names and folders - When you save a file to be posted on your website, use your keywords in the file names.

For example, hand-painted-china.html would be a great filename for a business that sells hand-painted china.

Because you are not prohibited from using the same filename as your competitors, as you would be with your domain name, and because you can do this regardless of whether you use a WYSIWYG editor like Front Page or Dreamweaver without knowing much HTML, this technique is quite easy to implement and make a regular practice.

Don't leave blank spaces in your filenames. Use an underscore character ( _ ) or hyphen ( - ) instead. I find both equally useful.

DIY SEO - Tip 2 - Domain Name Selection for SEO

Search Engine Optimizationn Articles : DIY SEO - Tip 2 - Domain Name Selection for SEO From Randy Duermyer

Select the Right Domain Name to Improve SEO

Select the right domain name - If you don't already have a domain name (like www.mydomain.com) or have been considering changing it, selecting the right domain name can be very important. You'll want your domain to reflect what your business does, and if at all possible include one or more of your targeted keywords.

For example, if you sell hand-painted china, www.hand-painted-china would be an excellent choice since you are trying to attact people who are looking for your product. Conversely, www.handpaintedchina.com would be okay, but less desirable, since most people who search for hand painted china will put spaces in between the words that are the target of their search. However, including hyphens in your domain name seems to be of diminishing importance as search engine technology evolves, so your primary consideration should be to use a domain name that is easy for your customers to remember that matches your branding.

The decision to change your domain name should not be taken lightly.

If your website has been out there for several years already, changing your domain name can actually hurt you in the end because the search engines typically include an aging factor in their algorithms so that an older domain could well have better ranking power than a newer one.

Any domain name registration service will provide a lookup tool you can use to see which domain names are available.

Do You Need Search Engine Optimization?

SEO Search Engine Optimization Articles : Do You Need SEO Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization SEO Defined

Search engine optimization SEO is simply the practice of making your website or blog more accessible to both search engines and search engine users; in other words, you're making it easier for them to find you.

Do you really need to optimize your site?

Well, of course, you have the option of not making your site accessible to search engines and directories...but what's the point of that? If you want your site to be found, then you must optimize it for search; and basically, that means you must make it visible to search engines. Web sites in today's competitive business market that are not optimized for search don't have much of a chance of being found by potential customers; and that goes for non-business sites as well.

There's really no excuse for not doing search engine optimization.

If you go through the trouble of making a web site, then your intention probably is for that web site to be found. SEO just is the process that helps this happen.

How do I optimize my site?Glad you asked! Here are a few resources to help you get started:

  • Ten Steps to a Well-Optimized Site: Want increased website traffic, higher search engine ranking, and increased customer satisfaction? Read these Ten Steps to a Well-Optimized Site and you'll be well on your way to accomplishing these goals.

  • Search Engine Optimization 101: In a very basic nutshell, search engine optimization, or SEO for short, is making your site and the site's individual pages visible and relevant to both search engines and search engine users.

What NOT To Believe When Optimizing Your Site for Search

If you're just getting started in search engine optimization for your Web site, you might (unfortunately) have been subjected to a few SEO whoppers. Before you start throwing away your time and money on search engine optimization wild goose chases, read these ten myths of search engine optimization.

1. Search engine optimization is too difficult to understand for regular people. Not so. The basics of a good search engine optimization strategy will equip you with what you need to make your site succeed in the search listings. Sure, there are some complicated topics in SEO, just like anything else. But once you have the basics under your belt, you’ll be well prepared to optimize your site. Read Ten Steps to a Well-Optimized Site to get a good feel for what the basics of SEO is all about.

2.There’s too much for me to learn about optimizing my site.

I’ll never catch up.Again, not so. Search engine optimization is just like any other subject. You wouldn’t expect to learn everything there is about the War of 1812 by watching one PBS documentary, would you? SEO is much the same. Just learn the basics and move on from there. You’ll be surprised at how much more comfortable you feel once you’ve learned the core concepts. Read Search Engine Optimization 101 to get a short and sweet definition of what optimizing your site really means.

3.Once I submit my Web site to search engines, I've got it made. Not quite. In fact, submitting your site to search directories or search engines does not guarantee instant success. The act of submitting your site does not guarantee that you will now receive more hits, or suddenly shoot up to the top of the heap in the search results. Site submission just tells the world that you are out there and ready to be visited. It's just part of the search engine optimization process. For more information, read Should I Submit My Site To Search Engines?, or The Basics of Site Submission.

4.Search engine optimization just takes up too much time. Not really. Again, the core of good search engine optimization is very basic. It just means you need to have a different point of view when writing your content, creating your source code, and designing your site’s look. You’re already spending time doing all these things, so if you optimize your site for your visitors and the search engines, you’re really only helping yourself in the end. Read When Will I Start Seeing Results? and The Top Five Mistakes in Search Engine Optimization to get more information.

5.I need to submit my site to at least 1,000 search engines...right?This is probably one of the most tired SEO myths out there today. First of all, where are these 1,000 or so search engines? Anyone who asks for money to submit your site to this many search engines is not going to be doing you any favors. Read Should I Pay For Site Submission? to get more information, or check out The Basics of Submitting Your Site, Yahoo Site Submission, or Submitting Your Site to Google - Should You Do It?.

Black Hat Search Engine Optimization

SEO Articles : Black Hat Search Engine Optimization From Wendy Boswell

What is Black Hat SEO?
Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. These black hat SEO techniques usually include one or more of the following characteristics:

  • breaks search engine rules and regulations
  • creates a poor user experience directly because of the black hat SEO techniques utilized on the Web site
  • unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.

A lot of what is known as black hat SEO actually used to be legit, but some folks went a bit overboard and now these techniques are frowned upon by the general SEO community at large. These black hat SEO practices will actually provide short-term gains in terms of rankings, but if you are discovered utilizing these spammy techniques on your Web site, you run the risk of being penalized by search engines.

Black hat SEO basically is a short-sighted solution to a long-term problem, which is creating a Web site that provides both a great user experience and all that goes with that.

Black Hat SEO Techniques To Avoid

Keyword stuffing: Packing long lists of keywords and nothing else onto your site will get you penalized eventually by search engines. Learn how to find and place keywords and phrases the right way on your Web site with my article titled Learn Where And How To Put Keywords In Your Site Pages.

Invisible text: This is putting lists of keywords in white text on a white background in hopes of attracting more search engine spiders. Again, not a good way to attract searchers or search engine crawlers.

Doorway Pages: A doorway page is basically a “fake” page that the user will never see. It is purely for search engine spiders, and attempts to trick them into indexing the site higher. Read more about doorway pages.

Black Hat SEO is tempting; after all, these tricks actually do work, temporarily. They do end up getting sites higher search rankings; that is, until these same sites get banned for using unethical practices. It’s just not worth the risk. Use efficient search engine optimization techniques to get your site ranked higher, and stay away from anything that even looks like Black Hat SEO. Here's a few articles that can get you on the road to knowing search engine optimization:

Search Engine Optimization 101

SEO Articles : Search Engine Optimization 101 From Wendy Boswell

The Basics of Search Engine Optimization
What Is Search Engine OptimizationIn a very basic nutshell, search engine optimization, or SEO for short, is making your site and the site's individual pages visible and relevant to both search engines and search engine users. How is this accomplished?

The Basics of Good Search Engine OptimizationGood search engine optimization is very basic. A successful search engine optimization campaign will contain these essential components:

Content. Content is what drives search engine rankings, content is what brings users to your site, and content, when sprinkled appropriately with keyword phrases, will feed search engine spiders. Rinse, repeat. Content is key in search engine optimization.

Simple Site Design. Sites that are successful in the search engine results have this in common-they are all simply designed, with a minimum of bandwidth hogging graphics, slowly loading animations or other such frippery, and are easy to navigate.

Simple, clean designs are what search engine spiders and search engine users like, because it enables them to get to what they're looking for; which is - you guessed it - content.

Well-written Meta tags. Meta tags-keyword, description, and title- are important, but they won't make or break your site. Meta tags are merely part of the overall success strategy. They need to be written with compelling, keyword phrase-heavy content that will make the user click through from the search results page.

Search Engine Optimization-It's Not Rocket ScienceSure, you can get really complicated and technical with SEO, just like any other subject. However, search engine optimization at its heart is simple and clean. Don't worry so much about the scary technical stuff if you're just starting out. Start slow, read, learn, read some more. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Most of all, be patient with yourself. Learning search engine optimization takes time, just like any other subject. Here are more resources that can help you with search engine optimization:

Top 5 Mistakes in Search Engine Optimization: Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the practice of making your site search-friendly both to search engines and searchers. There are five common mistakes that people tend to make when beginning to optimize their sites for search engines.

Effective Search Engine Optimization

SEOArticles : Effective Search Engine Optimization From Susan Ward

5 Basic Rules of Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization is crucial for anyone who wants people to visit his or her Web site. You can place as many ads as you like, but most people are still going to find your site because of its listings in search engines or directories.

Search engine optimization is the process of making web pages attractive to search engines. In my work, I visit hundreds of web sites every month. Sadly, many of them are throwing traffic away; they look fine to the viewer, but ignore the basics of effective search engine optimization.

It's a fact that most people who use search engines only look at the first one or two page of search listings. The goal of effective search engine optimization is to get your pages listed on those critical first pages for particular key terms.

How do you do this?

1) Remember that each page of your site is a separate entity.

You need to apply the basics of effective search engine optimization to each individual page. Therefore;

2) Choose appropriate key words or phrases for each page. For instance, although this page is part of the Small Business: Canada site, that's not one of the key phrases I've chosen for search engine optimization. (If you've read this far, I bet you already know what the main key word phrase of this page is!)

Phrasing matters. Many more people search for the term "effective search engine optimization" than for "effectively optimizing for search engines". To find out which key words or phrases are more popular than others, you can use a tool such as Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool; enter your chosen phrases and you'll see how many people searched for that term recently.

3) Give each page an appropriate title that includes the key word or phrase at least once. I so often see sites that use the name of their business as the title of all their pages. Is every page of their site about their business? Probably. But chances are really low that people will be searching for their business' name!

4) Put the key words or phrase that you've chosen in the page's title tag, meta keywords, and meta description. Make sure that the meta description is as appealing as possible, because some search engines actually use this description in the search engine results pages that people will be reading.

5) Be sure your chosen key words or phrase is repeated judiciously throughout the content of the page. You don't want to overdo it, or your page may be rejected as spam, but you need to repeat it enough times that the search engine's software will consider the phrase relevant.

As anyone in the business will tell you, these are the barebones basics of effective search engine optimization. But applying just these five basic rules of search engine optimization will give your web pages a much better chance of showing up on those critical first few pages of returned results.

What is your Google Penalty Plan

Search Engine Optimization SEO Articles : What is your Google Penalty Plan

If you're not thinking about this, you need to get started, and if you have started, how is it working out?

Google seems to be at a defining moment in time with it's penalizing sites with paid links, and almost constant shifts to the algorithm that make the SERPs a guessing game just about everyday.

So what are you doing now to make sure your site survives should it be hit by a Google penalty? You might be ranked very well today and making great money from the traffic that Google sends to your site naturally - so what if they flag your site for some deserved or un-merited form of spam?

With soo many people gaming the system, no wonder Google lashes out at the SEO community on occasion. We're the ones pushing them to provide more relevant results while at the same time doing things that some would question on a moral level.

Point is, Google delivers a ton of traffic. But the web is VERY big, and Google is not the be all and end all. You should be constantly looking for other ways to deliver traffic to your site such as:

Be active in forums - answer questions without trying to sell our product or service - instead, demonstrate your expertise in your answers and people will realize that what you say is worthy, and in turn will use your product or service when they are ready.

Write articles! I know it's old and tiresome and boring - but like the first point, it's a great way to not only show off what you know, but in inject your writing style. Some people will read you not for your content, but because they like the way you put things into perspective. Don't underestimate that.

Ask for help - I know a lot of people have trouble with this, but when my car breaks down, I have no trouble calling a mechanic. Use this same approach on the web. If you need help with a problem seek out the people who can help you. Many times in that process there is an exchange of information that leads to a deeper and "real" relationship - leverage that for links!

Tell 'em what you think - this applies to blogs, forums, articles and email responses. Why pretend to be something you're not? Like is too short to pussyfoot around and to be taken advantage of by other people.

Use your clients! I know I just said don't let others abuse you, and now I am saying to use your clients? What I mean is, your clients have other relationships as well, and if you perform well for them, they will refer you to their other business relationships.

See a pattern here? While Google is great for delivering text-based computer crunched results, at the end of the day, human relations (social engineering) is what makes you money. Treat people with respect, end any relationship with grace, and you'll see that over time, that crazy thing called karma makes it way back to you.

Enjoy the ride!

-To your online success!

Gut Genug SEO

Search Engine Optimization SEO Articles : Gut Genug SEO

For those unfamiliar with the German language, "Gut Genug" translates to "Good Enough".

Ever run into this situation? Maybe you've been fortunate enough that you are swamped with client work, and you have to do the bare minimum to get by. Instead of getting 50 links for the keyphrase that is most important, you only get 10.

Many times, when trying to get some work done, it is the client that impedes the progress. At that point, it's not your fault. But if you know that you could be doing more, are you really servicing the client?

The arguement could be made to say that if a client is only paying a certain amount, they should only get a certain amount of service. I can't argue that. But at some point the question needs to be asked: Are you providing value to your client? Or just taking their money?

So, enough about the rant. These situations do occur, and as I thought about it, I came up with a list of what would be gut genug:

(All of these are on a per month basis)

  • 10 keyword-rich text links for each keyphrase
  • 5 directory links for each keyphrase
  • A review of the copy on the targeted pages
  • A review of the page titles and meta tags
  • Inform client on any changes in the search space
  • Provide insight for client's search marketing strategy
  • Be a protector of the client brand

I know this is not a complete list, but it's certainly "good enough" for most clients...

Attending Search Conferences

Search Engine Optimization SEO Articles : Attending Search Conferences

Nobody asked, but I've got a few things to say about search engine conferences.

Many times in web forums and blogs, the question is asked from members if they should spend the money to attend one of the many search conferences that are available. Sometimes I was even asked if they are worthwhile.

Short answer. YES.

There is something alluring that takes place at a conference of your peers. With this industry being crafted on a daily basis, there are still many topics of search that have no thought leader in place.

That aside, many of the seo elites are very approachable. At the conference. Outside that scope (at the clubs or Google Dance) the regular rules of society apply.

So, while you are at a speaking session of one of your favorite bloggers or seo personas, take the time to approach them. Introduce your self, tell them what you do, and comment about their presentation. Better yet if you have a question that challenges them.

Also, don't forget about the audience members. Many times you'll find your self sitting next to a CEO or Marketing director for other seo firms or corporations that may some day need your services whether as an employee or consultant.

Be sure to talk to all the vendors. Yes, they are trying to pitch their wares, but they do have an expertise that you can tap into. Who knows, you may even develop a relationship that you can use when needed.

Make sure you have plenty of business cards to hand out. If possible write a personal note on it about whatever you spoke to that person about - it makes for a great way for them to remember you.

Enjoy the venue. I've been fortunate to see parts of the country that I wouldn't have a decent excuse to visit otherwise.

Take it all in and enjoy being in a place that is brimming with seo expertise. Because once you get back home, your inbox will be stuffed full, and you'll have to get back to the grind...
